Birthday Party Area Case Study

The Round Rock Express needed visual elements to accompany an area inside Dell Diamond reserved for kids’ birthday parties along with a few other pieces of collateral.

My solution was to make a set of playful illustrations unique to the Express and apply those to banners to create a fun, appealing space for kids and families.

Color

In order for this project to be on brand with other stadium elements, it needed to be a familiar color scheme. Instead of going with the team’s darker, more muted primary colors, I decided to go with the bright, fun colors taken from our powder blue jersey kits, which the Express wear once a homestand.

Sketches

I started with rough sketches that combined Texas with iconic birthday symbols, then plugged them into Illustrator to refine them for consistency and style. I experimented with many different color combinations to get a grasp on what look I wanted for the pattern.

I’d like to apologize to all of Texas for this rough sketch.

Pattern

Next, I had to narrow down which illustrations would work the best and add a few more to the mix to fit the Texan birthday theme I was going for. I finalized the illustrations with soft, rounded edges to help them feel childlike and playful.

After arranging them in a way I liked, I played around with the colors once more and added a soft blue stroke to each element for cohesion.

Lastly, I felt that the icons were lacking some form of interest, so I decided to add a bit of depth to each icon.

Birthday Party Area Windscreen

As the main driver of this project, the windscreen allows this space to be uniquely branded to provide a fun, appealing area for kids and families while keeping the area shaded from the blazing Texas sun.

As a last-minute edit, I had to label the area as “Spike’s Birthday Bash”, decided to get rid of the “Express” wordmark so the words would stand out, and added our “RR” lettermark to provide brand recognition.

Other Branded Projects

In addition to the party area banners, I designed a button for the birthday fan and a meal voucher utilizing this same look.
